| Welcome to www.irishterrier.net. Irish terriers originated in the British Isles. They are tough working dogs, that love to hunt underground animals. They are courageous and quite reckless on their hunting endeavors. Irish Terriers were used as messenger dogs during war times. Irish terriers have a rather wiry red coat. Their average height is 18 inches and their average weight is 26 lbs. The name Terrier is derived from the Latin word "terra" which means earth. Terriers go to earth to catch vermin. They were bred to dig and root out animals like rats, mice, snakes, moles, rabbits, foxes, snakes and other unfavorable animals. Other breeds of dogs may also be found on this website.
